 Top 10 Oldest Living Cities


1. Jericho, Palestine – inhabited since around 9000 BCE, considered the oldest city in the world.

2. Byblos, Lebanon – inhabited since 5000 BCE, famous for giving the world the word “Bible.”

3. Aleppo, Syria – settlements since 5000 BCE, despite recent wars, still inhabited.

4. Damascus, Syria – around 4300 BCE, often called the world’s oldest capital city.

5. Athens, Greece – inhabited since 5000 BCE, birthplace of democracy and philosophy.

6. Susa (Shush), Iran – settled since 4200 BCE, capital of the Elamite civilization.

7.  Varanasi (Benares/Kashi), India – around 3000 BCE, regarded as the oldest living city in India, and a major spiritual hub.

8. Plovdiv, Bulgaria – around 3000 BCE, Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city.


9. Sidon, Lebanon – founded around 3000 BCE, an important Phoenician city.

 Key Note:

Cities like Mohenjo-Daro, Harappa, and Catalhöyük (Turkey) are older but they are abandoned ruins, not living cities.

Multan stands out as one of the oldest living cities of South Asia, similar in age to Varanasi.
